Dubai's professional tourists spend 10-fold more

Global Forum for Engineering Education scheduled for 2014 Opulentus DubaiDubai has become the favourite destination of tourists, and a vibrant MICE [meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions] sector has helped place the emirate on the world map, according to a top DTCM official. Professional tourists who flock to Dubai to attend the myriad conferences spend 10-fold more than normal tourists visiting the emirate, said  Khalid bin Sulayem, Director-General, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). And thanks to Dubai’s excellent infrastructure and and hospitality sectors, world-class conferences are a regular feature all year through. Another ambitious forum, the emirate is gearing up for is the Global Forum for Engineering Education in 2014. The Engineering forum is expected to attract 1,500 participants and is expected to attract more tourists to the emirate. Sulayem said this will definitely put Dubai on the global map of education. He was speaking to ‘Emirates24|7’ on the sidelines of a press conference to announce the forum. The numerous conferences covering various disciplines held in Dubai attract professionals from worldwide, he said and added that the facilities available in the emirate are unrivalled. Hosting a conference is a time-consuming process and calls for co-ordinated efforts of official bodies. Dubai ensures every need of participants and visitors alike are met with efficiently, he added. The DTCM also signed an agreement with the American University of Dubai. The event was attended by Dr. John Beynon, Chair-Elect of Global Engineering Deans Council; Dr. Jose Carlos Quadrado, President of International Federation of Engineering Education Societies  IFEES); Essa AL Maidoor, Director-General of Dubai Health Authority and president of Society of Engineers UAE.
